Woodville, Miss. -- A New York professor recently donated 50 copies of Coming of Age in Mississippi to the Anne Moody History Project (AMHP). AMHP is a community service project of Wilkinson County Correctional Facility (WCCF) in Woodville, Miss.

Dr. Leigh Ann Wheeler, Professor of History at Binghamton University of Binghamton, New York, said she was delighted to make the contribution. She said via email:

“I sent these to you because I know you are using Anne Moody's autobiography to do great work with inmates at the correctional facility, and also because I know you want to introduce local residents and school children to Anne's life and work--and autobiography.”

Professor Leigh Ann Wheeler, Ph.D.

Wheeler, who is senior editor of the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of American History, is the author of How Sex Became a Civil Liberty (Oxford University Press, 2012) and Against Obscenity:Reform and the Politics of Womanhood in America, 1873–1935 (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004). She is widely published in academic journals.

Wheeler is currently doing research on Moody. In fact, she’s writing the first critical biography of the civil rights pioneer. In February, she will visit Centreville, Miss., Moody’s hometown, and other places in southwest Mississippi.

Wheeler said the visit, the first of many, will help her to get better acquainted with the area and the people who knew Moody. Her list of contacts includes the family and friends of the noted author. For more information on Wheeler, see her profile at:

Moody was born in 1940 in Centreville. She died in 2015. At the time of her death, she was living in Gloster, Miss. Her book, Coming of Age in Mississippi, was first published in December 1968. AMHP is working to promote and help preserve her legacy as a writer and worker in the civil rights movement.

AMHP member LaVern Taylor said she was pleasantly surprised by Wheeler’s gift, which arrived during the Christmas holiday season.

“I think it’s wonderful in this day and time that people are willing to give such thoughtfulness in educating our people,” she said. “You just don’t have that many people today who would do such a thing, but I’m really grateful to her for this gift.”

AMHP hopes to place the books in the Wilkinson County School District where students in both the high school and middle school can discover Moody’s legacy and be inspired to help make the world a better place to live.
