Justice done. According to the AP, "The white supremacist who slaughtered 51 worshippers at two New Zealand mosques was sentenced Thursday to life in prison without the possibility of parole."

See AP story here.

This tragedy occurred on  March 15,  2019 in Christchurch, New Zealand. Soon after it happened, to my surprise, people in Christchurch began downloading my 2000 newspaper story about Islam in a Pennsylvania community. The story, which was written for Public Opinion, is titled, "Dove sculptures at school: Traditional symbol of peace sparks fierce battle over Islamic religion." It can be viewed or downloaded at this link:

'He Burned His Boats': My 1985 Article that Appeared in 'Lighted Pathway' Magazine

This is an inspirational article I wrote over 30 years ago in the early days of my writing career. The article, “He Burned His Boats,” appeared in the October 1985 issue of Lighted Pathway, a Church of God youth publication. It is based on the story of Hernan Cortez (sometimes spelled Cortes), who reportedly burned his ships behind him in order to keep his men from turning back. -- Dr. Roscoe Barnes III

Once again J. D. King, noted pastor and historian, has broken new ground with an indispensable work on divine healing.  This time he has given us a wonderful book about Ethan Otis Allen, the man that A.B. Simpson called, the “Father of Divine Healing” in America.

This important publication is rare in that King dips deeply into our past, far below the surface of popular doctrinal and denominational teachings, in order to shed light on an important figure in divine healing ministry. He reveals, among other things, what the ministry of healing was really like -- and how divine healing was taught -- long before the appearance of famous Pentecostal pioneers and healing revivalists.

King's work is not the typical exposition on healing that has been told and retold for many decades by well-known preachers. Instead, his book is a fresh look at history that provides foundational teachings and inspiring testimonies of healing that have been well documented.

In sharing Allen's story, King is helping to preserve an important piece of history, and at the same time, he is introducing Allen to a new generation. King is also providing the church with insight on a timely topic. His book is an invaluable resource with practical implications for anyone pondering a healing ministry.

I am excited about this work, and I enthusiastically give it my highest recommendation. For it is essential reading for anyone interested in divine healing.

Major Matthew Schoettmer
Chief of Security

WOODVILLE, Miss. – Major Matthew Schoettmer, former resident of Peru, Ind., is the new Chief of Security at Wilkinson County Correctional Facility (WCCF). Schoettmer previously served as the captain of WCCF’s Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT).

Warden Scott Middlebrooks said Schoettmer, who has more than 20 years of experience in corrections, has done an outstanding job leading the CERT team. “I’m looking forward to working with him in his new position,” Middlebrooks said.

According to WCCF, Schoettmer has held a number of important positions in corrections. In addition to having served as a shift supervisor and lead captain at various facilities, he has worked as a special control unit lieutenant over a Segregation Unit.

Additionally, he has served as a urinalysis coordinator and K-9 field commander. He was a member of the Canine Unit at Miami Correctional Facility. Schoettmer also helped to train squad and military personnel going overseas to operate military prisons.

Schoettmer said he is happy about his new position. “We’re one team with one goal,” he said. “We are all in this together.”

In his new position, Schoettmer will report to the deputy warden of operations and directly supervise the facility captains. He will oversee the training of staff as well as the custody and discipline of inmates.

“As the chief of security, Schoettmer will respond to emergencies and handle all matters pertaining to safety and security,” said Middlebrooks. “His essential duties include the supervision of searches for contraband. He will also provide security for staff and the offenders.”

Lt. Lawanda Alexander
STG Investigator

WOODVILLE, Miss. – Lawanda Alexander of Summit has been promoted to STG Investigator at Wilkinson County Correctional Facility (WCCF). “STG,” which stands for “Security Threat Group,” refers to a formal or informal group of prison inmates.

In her new role, Alexander serves as a lieutenant for the facility. In her previous position, which she held from January to June this year, she worked as a case manager.

Altogether, Alexander has worked more than 16 years in investigations. “I feel that my new position is going to be challenging, but as I always say, ‘If you’re not challenged, you’re not growing,’” Alexander said. “I am up for the challenge.”

Alexander holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Jackson State University and an associate degree in law enforcement technology from Southwest Mississippi Community College. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Alexander is a graduate of Amite County High School in Liberty. The investigator said she is motivated by the love she has for her son. “I have a son that is my motivation to be the best in everything I set forward to do,” she said.
